Fibreglass doors offer great performance in a number of different areas.

What types of doors are made from fibreglass?

Fibreglass is relatively new to the market as a door material, but is becoming more widely adopted in homes due to its advantages over wood. It can be used in virtually all of the same applications as wood can but is stronger, lighter and provides better insulation. Likewise, it doesn't warp or crack from weather and water exposure. Fibreglass is scratch and dent resistant, and unlike wood or steel, it doesn't need to be finished to be weatherproof.

How are fibreglass doors constructed?

Fibreglass is a composite material made up of billions of microscopic thin glass rods bonded together with an epoxy. It can be produced to many different thicknesses and styles, which makes it perfect for door production. The doors are lighter and stronger than wood, and can even contain a wood grain appearance if so desired.

How do fibreglass doors perform?

  • Security – Fibreglass doors are much stronger than wood, and are actually closer to steel in terms of strength and security.
  • Weatherproofing – Fibreglass does not need to be treated for it to be weatherproof, giving it an advantage over wood and steel in this respect.
  • Soundproofing – Fibreglass excels at soundproofing and will dampen noise rather than carry it.
  • Cost – This material is more expensive upfront in comparison to others, but its longevity and thermal resistance may contribute to maintenance and heating savings in the longer term.
  • Weight – These doors are much lighter than wooden or steel equivalents.
  • Thermal insulation – Fibreglass is a great heat insulator, and has a very high thermal resistance.
