How I Turned My Construction Know-How Into a $20K Monthly Side Hustle

24 April 2024

Introduction

Introduction: Hey folks, I'm William Lin. I’ve been kicking around the construction and renovation game for over a decade. I want to share how I tapped into what I know to pull an extra $20k a month—yep, you heard that right.

Facing Industry Challenges: The construction scene’s full of curveballs—material prices going up and down, finding reliable workers, you name it. It is either feast or famine, deposits, and progress payments everyone is eating well. But when you’re working towards that progress payment, you’re on noodles and baked beans hoping the company doesn’t go under. The stress was getting to me.

My Leap into Innovation: It all started a couple years ago, sick of this feast or famine situation trying to find another income stream to help the business. I came across property inspections, initially on Word doc one would take me hours and hours. By the time a report is done the cost of it doesn’t out weight the time and effort. It also looked terrible, I gave up on the reports for a while since it wasn’t panning out.

Until, through a networking group I met an awesome mobile app developer in Auckland and told him my issues. Not long after that initial meeting I had my very own inspection app.

Long gone are the days of manually resizing photos and trying to line them up nicely or the endless page formatting, pulling my hair out at the end of it all. Everything is made for me in a nice to read report, which also looks much more professional than the standard Word doc.

Boosting the Business: I kicked off with $1500 a month on Google Ads. First month nothing, damn! But in the second month, two conversions—not too shabby but not great either. 2 became 10 then 12 and not long later 20 a month.

The website was slowing me down and I knew I had to do something about it. Going back to Pulsebay to upgrade my ancient website and sorting out my seo calls and bookings have gone through the roof. This month the 18th of April I have to date 30 inspections done or booked. With still a week and a bit to go things are looking excellent.

Scaling It Up: A year down the track of doing inspections, I reckoned this app could help other inspectors too. I chucked in some more investment, and now we’ve got our own product – a property inspection app – Inspectah. It’s a beaut because it lets any inspector customise their reports and set up shop to their liking. Everything’s automated—reports, payments, making everything look slick and professional. Now, I wrap up reports in about 30-45 minutes after the inspection.

Wrapping Up: I love popping into different homes, helping folks figure out what’s going on behind those walls, and saving them a heap of cash in the process. Keen to learn more about Inspectah, or need a property inspection in Auckland? Drop me a line. Or if you fancy a yarn about how I added inspections to our reno biz and started making that extra $20k, hit me up on LinkedIn. Always keen to share a few tips and tricks.

Cheers, William Lin
