How Do You Replace A Water Heater?

Hot water systems have become a common part of our lives and are somehow expensive to run. They heat water at a steady pace, allowing us to enjoy hot showers, warm baths and other soothing activities without worrying about scalding ourselves or heating too much.

The heating coil is usually placed inside the piping of the hot water system. When electricity passes through the coil, it heats the water inside it. This heated water is then distributed throughout the building via pipes.

Moreover, because hot water systems are relatively cheap and energy efficient, their widespread adoption should reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

A typical hot water system consists of three main components: a tank, an electric element and piping.

Water tanks are available in different shapes and sizes. Their basic function is to contain a large amount of water at a given temperature. They can be made out of plastic, metal, ceramic or glass.

Some have lids, while others do not. Generally speaking, the larger the tank, the longer it takes to fill. Smaller tanks cost less than large ones but take longer to refill. However, most of today's tanks are very safe.

They are equipped with pressure relief valves that limit the internal pressure caused by too much water. And, they are designed so that they cannot explode or leak.

Check local codes and regulations to ensure that your new tank complies with state health laws.

Electric elements are used to regulate the flow of electricity to the heating coil. They are also where the majority of problems occur.

Hot water systems may use thermostats, which adjust the amount of power to the coil based on room temperatures. Or, they may use a pilot light, which provides continuous lighting for up to 30 minutes after turning off the main electrical switch.

  • Variable resistor - Another type of electric element. These elements allow users to control the amount of power to one or more specific areas in a house. With this kind of device, users can set the desired temperature in individual spaces.

The best way to install a new electric element is by having professional help. Hot water repairs are not easy, especially if you don't know what you're doing.

For safety reasons, it's always recommended to hire professionals when replacing any part of your home's plumbing system.

Piping or tubing is a network of tubes that distribute hot water throughout the building. Pipes are installed above the floor and are filled with pipe insulation. There are numerous types of piping, ranging from copper to polyethylene.

Each type has its own benefits and drawbacks. Some types of piping require special tools to cut them while others come pre-cut.

Some hot water units don't work as well as others. If yours has failed, you'll need to replace it with something that works just as well as your old hot water storage but is more energy efficient.

There used to be a lot of options available, but now only two are worth looking into. They're called tankless and instant-on. Both require some plumbing upgrades but are much easier than replacing the whole system.

In most cases, anyone can follow instructions from an instruction manual or read a simple guide online. However, there are certain aspects of working on a water heater that can only be learned through experience.

If you haven’t worked on electrical systems and plumbing systems before, then it’s safe to say you shouldn’t attempt to do the job without proper training.

Even though you can train yourself to install pipes and fix leaky toilets, there’s simply no way you can become proficient at replacing a water heater until you actually do it.

Most importantly, if you mess up, it could result in a flood or fire hazard. Water heaters are dangerous machines and small accidents can lead to major damage.

Plumbing issues aren't always simple fixes. In fact, hot water service can be very complicated. And even though you might be able to fix them yourself those emergency hot water failures yourself, you don't want to risk damaging your home further.

That's why it's important to hire a professional plumber who knows exactly what to do with hot water system repairs and their running cost. They work 24/7 a day service.

Types Of Hot Water Systems

  • Electric hot water systems

These are devices designed to store and distribute hot water. They consist of two main components: The storage tank where the water is stored (or heated) and the distribution system, which distributes the hot water throughout the building. There are various types of these designs such as immersion type, space heating type, radiative type, etc. Each design has its advantages and disadvantages.

  • Gas hot water system

It is a gas-fired boiler that produces hot water for domestic use. GHS has been in existence since the early 20th century. It was developed to address the problem of inadequate heating during the winter months. It uses natural gas (methane) to heat water supplied into radiators.

A gas water heater is an appliance designed to heat tap water for drinking purposes, using natural gas (usual propane), electricity or both.

  • Solar hot water system

It is used for heating water within an enclosed space. This system usually uses some type of heat exchanger (refrigeration coil) in order to transfer heat to the water being heated. A solar hot water heater does not use electricity and can be used anywhere there is sunlight available.

  • Heat pump water heater

Also called an indirect-fired hot water tank) uses a refrigeration cycle to transfer thermal energy into the water in order to provide heated water for household use. This type of water heater is different from electric resistance water heaters because the output temperature does not depend on the current flow through heating elements in the water tank. Instead, the output temperature depends only on the compressor's evaporating pressure.
