Dulux Colour Forecast 2020

09 September 2019

Taking time to go back to basics is the theme of the 2020 Dulux Colour Forecast ‘Essence’, with colours selected in response to life in a madcap, always-on world.

Recognising that, despite the incessantly buzzing personal devices and litany of fake news, we have also become increasingly environmentally conscious, Dulux has designed a four-themed collection to encourage us to step away from the screens and enjoy more authentic, grounded experiences.

‘Essence’ encompasses four unique colour palettes: Comeback, Grounded, Cultivate and Indulge.

Dulux colour and communications manager Andrew Lucena-Orr says: “These colour trends are influenced by what’s happening in the world around us. Colours for 2020 are more restrained than in previous years. Brights are pulled back and influenced by nature. Neutrals are soft and sophisticated with a gently faded feel that speaks of stillness and calm.”

Comeback is a fresh and invigorating palette of oceanic and mineral shades of blue-green, azure and amber, highlighted with warm tones of burgundy, rust and clay. It is aimed at making the home somewhere to recharge energy and fuel creative thinking. It hints at escape and adventure, encouraging us to step away from day-to-day drudgery to embrace new thoughts and routines.

The Grounded palette aims to create a sense of luxurious relaxation in a space. It combines gentle, liveable neutrals, running from soft grey and biscuit through to muddy lavender punctuated with warm coral. The concept of luxury once meant a hefty price tag; now, it is about craftsmanship, longevity, authenticity and understated beauty.

Nature has become a centrepiece in most people’s homes due to its positive effects on mental and physical health. As we seek new ways to bring nature indoors, the Cultivate palette reflects that newfound oneness with nature with a serene layering of greens. Chalky blue, deep plum and curd provide a contrast and unexpected edge.

Finally, the Indulge palette is decadent and luxurious, featuring rich burgundy, eggplant, earthy brown, faded terracotta and soft coral. Dramatic and exciting, it gives a nod to the past with nostalgic touches of 70s disco and art deco. The idea of ‘perfect interiors’ has had its day with frayed edges and time-worn finishes featuring heavily in this look.
