Toilet pan installation

Can a toilet pan be installed using silicon as opposed to a cement bed? What are the regulations regarding this?

Hi William,

Generally speaking whoever's installing the toilet will need to specifically follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the pan - they should be very clear about what is and isn't appropriate when it comes to installation for any given pan.

Toilets will need to be installed by a licensed plumber, in accordance with the National Construction Code (NCC) and with the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA). Toilets and their associated plumbing should comply with the rules set out in the Australian Standard AS / NZS 3500 series - and if the toilet's a new one, it should be WaterMark certified.

Just want to be clear about this: installing a WC isn't something you shouldn't even consider doing yourself unless you're a qualified plumber - the kinds of safety, sanitation and insurance issues you're likely to face if it's done wrong aren't remotely worth what you might be saving.

You can get a few free quotes from plumbers around where you live using our get quotes page if that helps.
