Steam cleaning tiles and grouts

15 July 2018

When we talk about the effective tile and grout cleaning methods, steam cleaning definitely tops the list for removing dirt, dust and other contaminants from the deep layers of your tiles and grouts. It can also cut down the time to nearly half.

You can either rent or buy a steam cleaners but its important you ensure it's of a high quality.

Below are some steps to follow when steam cleaning your tiles.

Filing the steamer-

Fill the steamer with the appropriate level of water. The amount usually varies from steamer to steamer. While some of the cleaners have cleaners, others use water. Make sure that you fill in only the required amount of water.

Plugging the steamer-

Always make sure that you use a plug which is nearby. Plug in the steamer and let it warm up for about 5-20 minutes. Some steamers might take a longer time, but this is the standard time for most of the cleaners.

Moving furniture-

While your steamer is warming up, you can move all the furniture in the area to be cleaned. This gives you access to all the tiles and grouts, not just the visible ones. Moreover, it is the hidden areas that usually have mould, which can spread to other areas and can even cause infections.

Sweeping the floor-

Although steam cleaning in itself is an effective method, you must still do an initial sweeping. This removes the dirt, dust and grime from the topmost layers. Hence, all that is left is giving a final finish. Begin the steam cleaning procedure only when the machine is ready or you might not achieve the desired results.

Cleaning the tiles and grouts-

Next, you need to steam clean your area, focusing on smaller areas rather than trying to clean the whole room at once. For the tile areas, you will have to clean at least twice. For the grouts, going slow is the key.  Continue working on grouts until you find them returning to their original color. Start with one area and carefully move towards the next.  Also, make sure to use the right steam cleaner attachments for counters, walls etc. If there is a separate attachment for the grouts, always use that instead of using just one attachment for the entire floor.

Bleaching the stains-

Finally, do an inspection once more to ensure that all the corners and areas are clean. You might also require the use of chemical grout cleaners such as hydrogen peroxide or vinegar to bleach the stains from your light colored tiles and grouts. Refrain from doing so however in case of dark toned tiles and grouts.

Professional tile and grout cleaning-

While you can do the steam cleaning yourself, it is better to contact experts for a professional finish. Consider hiring a good tile and grout company for the same.  The professionals with their high power and efficient steam cleaners can give your tiles and grouts an amazing finish.
