Eco Friendly Home Design Trends To look out for in 2019

20 December 2018

Green home design is an important trend which has been emerging over the last couple of years, and in 2019 is will be more popular than ever. An increasing number of people are accepting green living as the norm and it is becoming more affordable and convenient than ever to embrace sustainable design trends in our homes. Let’s have a look at some of the eco-friendly home design trends we will see in 2019.

Energy-efficient lighting

LED lighting is the latest technology in energy efficient lighting. It uses 85% less energy than incandescent or halogen lighting and can also reduce energy bills significantly. With government initiatives encouraging Australians to replace their original bulbs with LED bulbs, more people are becoming aware of the benefits of LED, while lighting manufacturers are incorporating LED lighting in their product designs.

Water-saving appliances and fixtures

2019 home design trends will continue to emphasise the conservation of water – one of our most precious resources.  Many are integrating grey water systems into their homes to enable them to capture and store rain water from roofs and gutters for use in irrigation and indoor plumbing.

Other water-saving trends include timed sprinklers, water-filtration systems, low-flow toilets and water-saving showerheads and faucets.

Recycling and up-cycling

This year design trends will focus on reusing and recycling. Instead of buying new items people are encouraged to reinvent and repurpose objects they already own. Interior designers and many consumers are already looking to find creative new uses for used items and reinvesting in old pieces.

Natural materials

Natural materials like wood, bamboo and cotton looks great but also have a much smaller impact on the ecosystem than synthetic, mass-produced products. In 2019 more homes will feature natural design elements like bamboo floors and kitchen cabinets, earth-friendly tiles and organic cotton textiles.

Bringing the outside in

As more people are becoming aware of sustainability and environmentalism, they are appreciating the importance of green spaces and its health benefits. In 2019 we will be making our homes ‘greener’ by adding greenery indoors and extending our indoor spaces to the garden. Many new homes are now designed with layouts and features that allow easy access to the backyard or patio. Home owners are also adding features like awnings and retractable roof systems to create shade and make the outdoor area comfortable throughout the year.
