Hi Nic,

have you done your kitchen reno yet? i have converted many U shaped kitchens into galley style. The best way is to move the cooker into the island and put in floor to ceiling cabinetry on the wall where the cooker was. That way you add lots of storage and do large pantry with pull to drawers.

Good Luck,

Belinda.
Pictures would really be amazing to visualise what you're trying to achieve with all of this, but I imagine that with all your items already properly tucked away into the storage cabinets in the kitchen, it's really just a matter of reshuffling where everything goes? Besides the stove and washer/dryer items that might need a connection, it's not really a lot of juggling to do since you've not much space to begin with anyway..

Hi Nic,

Great question! There are a couple of things to consider when designing a kitchen which I'm sure you have already considered such as the basic height of the cabinets and width of the bench tops? It is possible to get a combination of 'standard' and 'narrow' bench tops to give you more floor space, plus open shelves may be a better way to use wall space than closed in upper cabinets, glass fronted cabinets are a good compromise, plus you can use lighting effects to add drama and ambience. A good design and smart layout is always better than a big kitchen with wasted space. Just keep in mind 'Dead' corner cupboards where useful space is lost - using a carousel etc can help with this. Also placement of appliances will affect the work flow and a dishwasher or dish drawer can make a big difference long term if placed in the wrong position. Have you considered 'finding' additional space such as incorporating the laundry into the kitchen? Or moving it to the bathroom and 'growing' into the empty space?

Just a few ideas.

Andrew
