Building your ‘right now’ home

29 June 2018

Is it possible to have the perfect home?  Is there actually such a thing as a perfect home?

Let’s be honest, a perfect home is one that is right for now.

As family dynamics evolve and our needs and circumstances change, we want different things from our homes.  Families expand and contract, people start working from home whilst others stop going to work altogether and these changing situations all have an impact on the way we live at home.

So what does that mean if you’re planning to build a new home?   Do you know exactly what you want?  Do you know what your budget is?  Is there any point in waiting to build your dream home in your dream suburb?  How flexible should your new home design be?  Do you need to anticipate alterations in the future?  What’s important to you?  What can you live with - and what are you prepared to live without?  What type of lifestyle are you after?

These questions are all part of meetings builders should have with potential clients - and the answers can be surprising.

While many people do have a really good idea of what they want from their new home, they often find that an in-depth discussion with experienced building professionals unlocks heaps of possibilities and opportunities that they had never even considered.

A skilful designer is able to plan a home that works perfectly for now - and which also has the potential for change in the future.  A nursery can become a study.  A raised sandpit can become a veggie garden.  Space under the stairs can become a study nook.  A bedroom can be converted to a granny suite.  Moveable interior partitions, flexible plumbing, thoughtful placement of power points, electrical cabling and even drywalls can turn toddler territory into teenage terrain into a seniors’ sanctuary as families grow up.

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when they’re thinking about building a new home is falling in love with a home design or dream that is way beyond their budget.  The reality of what they can afford can be disappointing and disheartening - but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Unless you’ve been through the home-building process before, you’ll probably need some guidance in terms of what you can expect from your budget.
