Bathroom trends for 2018

Hansgrohe has released its bathroom trends for 2018 that prove the room for personal grooming is evolving from a purely function space into a tranquil place to unwind.

Here are the three trends Hansgrohe says will be influencing bathroom design around the world this year.

Natural materials

From rustic wood elements to exposed concrete or brick walls, natural materials create a serene environment that is conducive to relaxation. Natural elements help to boost the calm feeling bathroom design tries to create and also allow modern showerheads and fixtures, which generally have linear, geometric designs, to stand out.

Lots of light

Bathroom lighting has definitely improved in recent years so that bathrooms are now some of the best lit rooms in a house. However, there is a fine line between well-lit and over-lit, which can cause bathrooms to look clinical. This is why natural lighting is coming back in a big way.

Natural lighting has a positive effect on wellbeing and helps to maintain the body’s natural circadian biological clock.

Clearly defined room layout

A clearly defined and spacious room layout opens the space up for freedom of movements. This is helped by lots of light, soft colours and practical storage space to give the room an uncluttered look and an air of peace and quiet.

“It’s the little things that bring cosiness to what used to be a very functional and sterile space: natural and homely materials, friendly textiles, and plants and candles convey tranquillity and inspire us to return to the simple pleasures of life,” says Hansgrohe A/S managing director Thomas Leth.

As the editor of BUILD I have a keen interest in sustainable housing and new technologies.
