Hi,

Sealing the surface with an impervious paint finish is the best place to start - enamel paints can provide an impervious surface. Waterbased paints - acrylics are porous and will allow moisture to penetrate to the subsurface. Unfortunately enamels have modified vegetable oils in their structure and tend to yellow over time in dark damp conditions such as door pockets near laundries and bathrooms.

An alternative is to seal the door with additional coats of acrylic paint ensuring you cover all edges as well as surfaces thoroughly.

Good luck with the door.
