Banking on Good Design

13 July 2017

A classic in the Australian landscape is the 1920s State Savings Bank, it has been given a new start as a one bedroom plus study stylish apartment with ground floor studio.

The heritage 1920's bank becomes a home in inner-city Melbourne

The design team at JFK Design have used an exterior palette of smooth concrete, black zinc, original red brick and galvanised columns.

The kitchen uses spotted gum extensively to bring warmth to the interior while linking to the exterior's palette.

Internally, warmth is brought to the home with spotted gum for wall panelling in the kitchen and for the bookcases and desk in the study.

Smooth concrete and spotted gum work together in harmony in the bathroom

Careful design of windows to allow for natural light have been incorporated, while north-facing glazed sliding doors provide a vista across the leafy suburb.

Custom designed pendant lights add to the natural light incorporated into the design

The design has given JFK Design awards in the 2016 Building Designers Association of Victoria Awards:

  • Residential Design of New Homes: $500,000-$1 million construction cost
  • Residential Interior Design
  • Excellence in the Use of Glass

2016 National Building Design Awards:
