6 questions to ask before investing in a home security system

Home security technologies have come a long way in the last decade. Originally, these systems were hardwired and relied on a telephone landline to work. Today, the home phone is dying a slow death, with nearly one third of Australians mobile-only phone users.

Home security systems have adapted accordingly. Modern wireless systems use intuitive sensors that work using radio frequency waves.   Although it may seem confusing at first, it pays to know your way around the basics of home security technology. This can help to make an informed decision or ensure you’re getting the most from your system. After all, this is the system you rely on to keep your home and family safe.

ADT Security suggest the following six questions to help you make the right decision.

Is it wireless or hardwired?

Because wireless systems are so much easier and cheaper to install, they have become a popular alternative to hardwired security systems.   A wireless system can be installed with no cables and wiring throughout your home. This makes servicing easier as there’s no need to check metres of physical wiring. If you move house, a wireless system is portable and can be quickly uninstalled and moved to your new address.

Is it monitored?

Monitored home security systems provide peace of mind that a response will be initiated in the event of a security breach. At ADT, our 24/7 Security Response Centre provides round the clock monitoring by trained professionals, who can deliver immediate support.

Can you afford it?

It’s a mistake to assume that installing a home security system is only for the wealthy. Today, security systems are more affordable than ever for the average home owner.

For example, ADT Security offers a monitored, fully installed, security system from as little as $299 plus a monthly monitoring fee of $36.50 per month.  This may be a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Can the system be adapted as your home and lifestyle changes?

Installing home security involves a tailored approach. A security consultant will meet with you to design a system that meets the needs of your home and lifestyle.

A basic security system can monitor the main entry and exit points to the home, but additional sensors, cameras and interactive home automation features can be added. For example, renovators can add extra sensors to protect new areas of the home, or parents can install cameras inside to make sure their children make it home from school safely each afternoon.

Can you control the system from your mobile phone?

Similar to how a car’s key fob allows a driver to remotely control their car alarm, mobile phones can be used to arm and disarm a home security system and activate interactive home automation features (such as switching lamps on and off). This works by transmitting signals from your home security system to your mobile via 3G connection. It allows you to view a live feed from the cameras in your home, and receive SMS alerts if a security breach is detected.

This makes home security more convenient and gives you more control over the system while you’re away from home.

Will it continue to operate during a power outage?

Monitored home alarm systems are designed to continue operating during power black outs, thanks to a built in back-up battery. The standby battery kicks into gear when the main power is out. Its duration will vary depending on the condition of the battery and the power usage of the system, so it’s important to properly maintain it. An ADT Security system notifies homeowners when the standby battery is running low and needs to be replaced.
